Platypus Lobster Shack
Posted on Tuesday, December 23, 2014
Just one of those rare days where Justin and I have a socially acceptable date. We head to the Platypus Lobster Shack after much anticipation and begging from my part hehe.

Said date and alfresco dining we are greeted with! Initially we are apprehensive on sitting outdoors, but even without any fans whatsoever, the place is really windy and cooling (thank you venturi effect).

Orders up! We come really early (around 6) to beat the crowd we are expecting. Food takes ok time to arrive. Staff is generally quite blur and doesn't notice us waving our hands for attention even though there are all of two tables to serve. Hmm.

First up - the Crustacean Bowl ($26.00++) is what I was looking forward to the most. In concept it sounds brilliant - uni creme, butter-poached lobster, Japonica rice, honey ponzu, caviar, char-grilled cheddar cheese, sesame and chervil (took this straight from their menu).

In reality, this dish was disappointing, mainly because the lobster was so darn cold to the point it didn't make sense. The rice was warm below while the cheddar cheese was burnt and gooey on top, so it had this weirdass sandwich feeling where I would bite in and be greeted by hot, cold then hot again. Huh??? But overall, the taste was still there. A decent dish that could have been great.

We move on to our Smoked Paprika Lobster Roll Set ($22.90++), which in theory also sounds awesome. Disclaimer: I have never eaten a lobster roll in my life so my views on this may be a little warped.
I was imagining biting into something warm, with a heavy smoked flavour and a little spicy, but the reality when I bit into it, it tasted like... Bolognese??? Where did the tomatoes come from?? This is the menu description: "Spanish paprika, butter poached lobster, hollandaise, chervil."
... AND TOMATOES?

If you haven't guessed, I rather dislike tomatoes and would not have ordered this flavour had I known. The bun is also cold and the lobster is under-seasoned. Bleah.

We leave around 7pm and the restaurant still only has one other couple.
