Of Late Night Talks

Posted on Wednesday, November 29, 2017

We talked about how my biggest regret in life is being a late bloomer, but I am most grateful for the past 3 years of growth and becoming more introspective and self-aware to how my thoughts lead to my actions and impact my life.

Some say that confidence means accepting who you are unapologetically, but to fully be at peace with yourself doesn't mean that hence the world should bend to your will and accept you wholesale, "take it or leave it".  Self acceptance - which inherently leads to self confidence (to me at least) is having the humility to see and acknowledge these shortcomings, living with them, acknowledging that they need to be changed - and changing it.

I guess thanks to everyone who had the patience to guide me there or at least having the patience to wait till I reached it.

Whatever "it" is.

You are You

Knits Capsule Dress | ASOS Leather Slides |
Cluse Minute Watch | Trifted Basket Bag

Random thoughts this week: In a funny way I'm very public and open sharing with everyone what I do, eat and wear on daily basis but not so much how I feel - does that make me a private person still?

I am very comfortable with life but I also feel that I need to shake things up a bit.

I'm in love with this new basket bag of mine and feeling very pleased with what a good deal it was on Carousell.

I had such a hard childhood and here I am wishing I could be a child again because I'd be so much smarter and chiller than I was.

What's next?

Mellower Days

Posted on Monday, August 21, 2017

Amongst the many things Alex and I talked about, I remember discussing learning new languages and how it changes the way you think about the world. When I was 12, I developed an interest in learning French because we had one of those touristy "learn French" books at home, but I told myself I was too old, I mean, there were kids who've been learning it since they were born - that's 12 years ahead of me and I'd never catch up.

So as ridiculous as it seems (imagine if I actually did start learning French when I was 12), I won't let being "too old" ever be an excuse again. The thing about learning languages is that there is no downside. No one will ever react to you negatively for trying to speak their language, if anything, it opens up doors and helps you connect with people. I say this with first hand experience, having an acquaintance turn into a new friend because of a shared interest in a language (Norwegian, ahem, hi Beverly); speaking to strangers randomly and seeing their eyes light up in gentle amusement when I ask them if they are German in deutsche.

Honestly, I was so horrible in Chinese I believed myself for years to have zero flair for languages and still, I don't think I have any kind of natural ability - just a desire to learn, and that's the most important thing. I wish I learnt more relevant languages to where I live but I guess we can't choose what we are passionate about.

What next? Cantonese? French (finally)?

Pleat-ence

Posted on Thursday, July 13, 2017

At the risk of sounding overly ponderous, having been out from school and worked for 3 years - where do we go from here? Like where does life go and what meaning does it have? We work, get married, get a house, have kids, maybe squeeze some traveling in between, meet up with friends, host some cookouts, get old and then we die and that's it. I know this is a question everyone asks themselves at some point in their lives, but I guess when you were young you had actual "stages" in life - "oh, when I was in Secondary school, or when I was in JC". I guess as a fresh adult the idea is still strange to me how we'll probably now say "oh when I was working at company xxx" or "before I had kids" or "before I was married".

People have said to me that oh no Mon, your life is so exciting because you get to work on your own time / go to a lot of events and I promise you that there are days that are great and I'm so thankful that I get to do what I get to do, but then there are days you wake up and lie on your bed and just can't move from the knowledge that "this is it, this is life".

I've been meeting lots of fellow girls who have quit their jobs to work from home as well and I can say that on some days it is soul crushing from all the lack of social interaction (I can go one day without talking to anyone face to face), on other days you go to sleep thankful that you don't have rush to work in the morning and that you have absolute freedom to do whatever the F you want to do. All I can say is that I am grateful for our tiny blogging community because then there is the excuse to meet up with the same lovely souls again, if not I would literally not see anyone till the weekend.

Anyway, my current understanding is that life is long. There's just a lot of white static in the middle where we work to earn a living so that we can live it.

Wedding Bells

ASOS Bias Cut Satin Gown | Charles & Keith Heels

So Justin and I were just discussing how weird it is to finally be old enough that when our friends get married / pregnant, we can actually be happy for them (instead of worried about their life choices, haha). Anyway, November and December was super packed with weddings - I still feel a bit young to actually be getting married so I've just been enjoying watching other people do so and the general pomp and circumstance that comes with the dressing up, the nice meals and catching up with old / new friends. And of course, like all girls, I have been taking some notes and giving some thought to what I truly want for my own wedding (when that day comes), but till then... I prefer to just be relatively stress free as the wedding guest!

Missing in Action

Posted on Monday, August 31, 2015

Hello from Honfleur! It's hard to belive that we're already halfway through our France trip after 8 months of planning (mostly being excited and telling everyone, "we're going to France!" then panicking to do some planning in the last month, haha).

This morning we left Paris (after a week of erratic weather but happy tummies and emptier wallets) and we're now embarking on the second part of our trip to tour around France thanks to Insight Vacations and Poulet - which is a funny story, so ask me about it! I'm sorry this blog hasn't been the most active, but do check out my Instagram (@luxmondi) for more live and consistent updates on how this trip's been going so far!

6AM

Posted on Saturday, July 18, 2015

It's been a while I've woken up this early for anything but you know how all photographers rave about the morning light, so I figured it would be fun to test myself - and for dear E-main too! Fun fact, the light only got really good around 7:30-8:00am onwards, but like they say, it's always better to be early than on time, right?

Anyway, a part of me is worried about how my photography style has changed ever since I switched up from my 500D to my 6D. While I truly enjoy the sharpness I get from a bigger sensor now, there's a part of me that hates it if my pictures look to clean cut - too sharp, too professional. To me there is artistry in a bit of grain and fuzziness. In the end, it's easy for any layman to take a nice and sharp photos if they have the money to throw at a fancy camera (or borrow a friend's), but it's how you do the post-processing that makes all the difference between an OK photo and a much more evocative one.

Ventures

Topshop Camisole | Topshop MOTO Shorts | Cheapo flats from Thomson Plaza (haha)

Just last weeks 'venture with Alexis. Whenever I need a friend to do random nonsense with it's her - we ended up deciding just the day before to try laser clay shooting at Sentosa and dreamt of discovering our natural talent in bad-assery - but of course, it turns out that we suck and I think the mosquitos probably scored more hits than we did!

Anyway, I happened to be cleaning out my hard drive the night before and laughing with Alexis over the horrendous photos of us when we first met in JC - I've almost forgotten how I looked like and how people treat you differently based on your outside. I think it's taken a few years for my inside to catch up with my outside, but I'm so glad for the friends like Alexis who saw it before anyone else could.

I want to spend more time on my blog, and less on Instagram.

Under the Weather

Zalora Printed Jacket | Zara Camisole

Been down with fever, cramps and every possible thing you wouldn't want on one of my busiest social weeks of the year but somehow I still found a way to get up in the morning, even put on make-up (I am the laziest person ever when it comes to beauty) and head out of the door to fulfil my obligations. I like to think that my performance this weekend is a testament to how much I've grown as a person.

Also, I evidently still have problems drawing my eyeliner right, but that's a work in progress.

Film is Dead

Posted on Sunday, January 18, 2015

*Photography rant, ignore* I paid a ridiculous $26.00 to get my slide film developed at Ruby Photo - this was after a miscommunication on their side in which I was told to come back after a week to collect it, but after a week I came back only to be told to come back in two more weeks because my film only finally got sent out for developing. HUH? Then why even tell me to come back in 1 week when it takes 2 weeks to develop it in first place? I could go to Grace Digital Labs to get my normal film done in 1 hour except they just don't develop slide film, only cross process it, so basically guys, do not go to Ruby Photo ever to get your film developed. *End of photography rant*

It's things like these that remind me why I don't shoot film as much as I used to before (though seeing the full frame images is motivation for me to save up for my 6D. Hopefully this year heh). Justin helped me take this photo while scouting for my location for Kathleen's shoot. Andddd, because I hate it when people act all secretive about locations, this is the rooftop cafe of the YMCA opposite the Grand Cathay. There's a pretty awesome pool, and the cafe is generally empty. I'll upload the rest of the photos soonish.

Bye 2014

Listening to: Dirty Paws - Of Monsters and Men

I caught sight of myself in the mirror the other day and it struck me how I haven't really looked at myself properly in a while. I've been spending so much time staring at Instagram pages of beautiful people with their pseudo perfect lives that I forgot that ok, I'm still young and to say the least, decent looking. I forgot to take care of myself in a sense. I still cut my hair as if I'm fifteen. I barely wear any make up out. I'd safely say a good 50% of the time I am in FBTs since I work from home. I buy clothes that I like to imagine myself wearing but the truth is I haven't worn half and the other half I only wore once.

The only time I really indulge in taking more photos of myself is when I travel, and I think I owe it to myself to make use of the fact that I have a flexible schedule, little commitments and steady income now to go see the world more. Sometimes I marvel at the fact that I managed to travel all over Europe  didn't get lost. I think I underestimate myself at times. The New Year is people's excuse to set a deadline for themselves that "ok, by this and this date I will start being a better person. This year I will do this and this more", but without the calendar, the New Year would just be any other day. So why don't we start now?

Will the Festive Season Never End?

Posted on Wednesday, December 17, 2014

This week has been insanely busy but fulfilling at the same time. After one year of running The Ordinary Co, I feel like the business has finally made another leap of progress the past weekend. Hoorah for Christmas! Also, after much procrastination, I finally found the time to write my Christmas cards this year - a habit I almost forgot I had. I still find a lot of joy in writing with a pen rather than typing - forming little blocks of letters as fast as I can but still making them all align. I wish I bought more cards because there's so many people to thank for making me who I am today but you only have so much time and space in your heart to store it all, you know?

Rework

Posted on Thursday, November 6, 2014

It's been a trying week or so. Sometimes the people you care for the most take you for granted and the people you take for granted care for you the most and maybe your world's been upside down and you just didn't know it. But that said, I'm pretty happy with every other aspect of my life at the moment, so that's good, right?

Mussels are Filter Feeders

Posted on Friday, October 10, 2014

Mussels are filter feeders.

I tried to draw a picture of a mussel but it was pretty abysmal, so dear Annette (whose adorable drawings on her blog always make me feel a little lighter inside) helped me to draw one instead hahaha. I guess I must have sounded pretty crazy when I first asked her but it's absolutely adorable and much better than what I initially came up with.

I feel strongly most of the time that we are a product of our environment, and sometimes the choices we make are influenced by the people or situations around us. How in control are we, really?

Work

Posted on Saturday, April 26, 2014

I jumped straight out of school and into employment. Yes, I have a job and skipped the whole aimless "what do i do with my life phase", but that said, I wouldn't have minded just a week or two off to chill once exams ended since I kind of hit the ground running ever since I came back from exchange. YET at the same time, it feels good to be at a nice little company where it's actually fun to wake up and head into work, and skip the whole headache of job hunting. Weekends are precious, and I work on personal projects, even after work itself. ALL I TALK ABOUT IS WORK. I guess this is the start of the rest of my life, and I didn't realise how soon it was going to start.

Slow Motion

Posted on Thursday, February 6, 2014

Hi guys, sorry if this space is a little dead these days. It's not that I have nothing to post - trust me I still have a ton of traveling photos - but as you may have guessed in my previous entries that I'm in a state of denial over the end of exchange, and a part of me is holding the photos back because it's like if I don't release them, I won't have to deal with it being over.

I've started my part-time internship this week at The White Space - I'm a suit/creative/copywriter (do it all!), but this isn't the only part of my life where I have dual roles - other than interning, I'm also a student, and now a half a business owner (do it all!) and there's only so much time in a day you have, really. If I'm not working, i'm doing things for The Ordinary Co, doing projects for school, attending class, squeezing in time with the bf... Yes, I have a habit of overloading myself with things. I think I am over-compensating for how I hardly did anything when I was a kid. However, there are some things I do because I enjoy them, and this blog is one of them.

The night before my first day of work, I think it did finally hit me that exchange is over. I miss my big airy kitchen. I miss only having to think about where I'm going next, what new dish I wanted to experiment with, having a nice dinner to look forward to every Sunday with my exchange family, knowing the fact that I could probably just uproot myself and go overseas to work and not be missed much (except by Justin and the few sweet friends who made the effort to talk to me even when I was away). I wish we had more time together, exchange. I wonder if exchange were a person if he'd spend as much time thinking of me as I do of him. Haha.

My goal this weekend is to put up a big, fat post. Don't abandon this space, friends!
