Bye 2014

Posted on Wednesday, December 31, 2014

Listening to: Dirty Paws - Of Monsters and Men

I caught sight of myself in the mirror the other day and it struck me how I haven't really looked at myself properly in a while. I've been spending so much time staring at Instagram pages of beautiful people with their pseudo perfect lives that I forgot that ok, I'm still young and to say the least, decent looking. I forgot to take care of myself in a sense. I still cut my hair as if I'm fifteen. I barely wear any make up out. I'd safely say a good 50% of the time I am in FBTs since I work from home. I buy clothes that I like to imagine myself wearing but the truth is I haven't worn half and the other half I only wore once.

The only time I really indulge in taking more photos of myself is when I travel, and I think I owe it to myself to make use of the fact that I have a flexible schedule, little commitments and steady income now to go see the world more. Sometimes I marvel at the fact that I managed to travel all over Europe  didn't get lost. I think I underestimate myself at times. The New Year is people's excuse to set a deadline for themselves that "ok, by this and this date I will start being a better person. This year I will do this and this more", but without the calendar, the New Year would just be any other day. So why don't we start now?

Christmas 2014

Posted on Thursday, December 25, 2014

Christmas at JoLo's! The photos are quite shittyz cause I seriously have no time this month to edit them properly. Sorry!!

We are greeted with the awesome perfumed smells of Christmas and low ambient light. The star of the show is of course the dinner set up by Jo who spent an hour on laying the table out - but it looks amazing??? Well worth the time!

And then it's prep time for the food!

Party prep team!

The table starts to slowly fill up!

Someone's getting hungry...

Finally settling around the table to FEAST!

Weirdly this is a rare one of our gatherings that we don't have tons leftover food :O

And after dinner, we get a surprise visit from Santa!!!

Haha i don't know why we were all laughing so hard. We have our Secret Santa gift exchange in which many dubious selections were handed out like Linette's G-String to Jo, and a sad loofa that ended up getting passed around a lot in favour of snatching another person's present!

Merry Christmas everyone! It's hard to believe it's been another year already, but a good one too.

How did you spend your Christmas?

Platypus Lobster Shack

Posted on Tuesday, December 23, 2014

Just one of those rare days where Justin and I have a socially acceptable date. We head to the Platypus Lobster Shack after much anticipation and begging from my part hehe.

Said date and alfresco dining we are greeted with! Initially we are apprehensive on sitting outdoors, but even without any fans whatsoever, the place is really windy and cooling (thank you venturi effect).

Orders up! We come really early (around 6) to beat the crowd we are expecting. Food takes ok time to arrive. Staff is generally quite blur and doesn't notice us waving our hands for attention even though there are all of two tables to serve. Hmm.

First up - the Crustacean Bowl ($26.00++) is what I was looking forward to the most. In concept it sounds brilliant - uni creme, butter-poached lobster, Japonica rice, honey ponzu, caviar, char-grilled cheddar cheese, sesame and chervil (took this straight from their menu).

In reality, this dish was disappointing, mainly because the lobster was so darn cold to the point it didn't make sense. The rice was warm below while the cheddar cheese was burnt and gooey on top, so it had this weirdass sandwich feeling where I would bite in and be greeted by hot, cold then hot again. Huh??? But overall, the taste was still there. A decent dish that could have been great.

We move on to our Smoked Paprika Lobster Roll Set ($22.90++), which in theory also sounds awesome. Disclaimer: I have never eaten a lobster roll in my life so my views on this may be a little warped.

I was imagining biting into something warm, with a heavy smoked flavour and a little spicy, but the reality when I bit into it, it tasted like... Bolognese??? Where did the tomatoes come from?? This is the menu description: "Spanish paprika, butter poached lobster, hollandaise, chervil."

... AND TOMATOES?

If you haven't guessed, I rather dislike tomatoes and would not have ordered this flavour had I known. The bun is also cold and the lobster is under-seasoned. Bleah.

While the food wasn't horrendous, Justin and I ended the meal feeling like we did have a bad meal. Really disappointing! While I think that it is fine to give this place a try, I don't think we'll be coming returning anytime soon, and I don't know why everyone is raving about this place.

We leave around 7pm and the restaurant still only has one other couple.

Will the Festive Season Never End?

Posted on Wednesday, December 17, 2014

This week has been insanely busy but fulfilling at the same time. After one year of running The Ordinary Co, I feel like the business has finally made another leap of progress the past weekend. Hoorah for Christmas! Also, after much procrastination, I finally found the time to write my Christmas cards this year - a habit I almost forgot I had. I still find a lot of joy in writing with a pen rather than typing - forming little blocks of letters as fast as I can but still making them all align. I wish I bought more cards because there's so many people to thank for making me who I am today but you only have so much time and space in your heart to store it all, you know?

Erica for The Ordinary Co

ERICA for THE ORDINARY CO
Model: Erica Loh
Photography: Myself

Some of my favourite snaps of Erica from the latest TOC Christmas Lookbook. Whenever I plan a campaign I always shoot them how I think girls want to be shot. Not cheesy mass-market commercial stuff, not hyper-sexualised, but kinda just there and present and yourself. Sometimes I feel like if I cloned myself then this blog will be updated more regularly, haha. But till then, someone has to take the damn photos, right?
