Hi all! Shall do a mini post before I head out for my $1.00 oyster-gasm feast with zee boyfriend!

When one enters my blog, one of the first things that may catch your eye is this sketch of me on my sidebar! Well, it was done for my by my lovely and talented friend Deborah, if you remember her from when I visited her a few posts ago at the Red Bull Curates: Canvas Cooler Project.

There really is true likeness! It's always interesting to see how other people see you in their eyes, and I love how Deborah used lots of technicolor pops to show what a cool and colorful person I am *ahem ahem*. And of course, I wish my hair looked this fah-bulous all the time, but I guess in real life it's mostly pin straight :( But I'm working on it!!

When I told Deborah I was hoping to get a little art work done for my blog, she was really sweet and agreed to do it for me at no charge, but really, if you guys wish to hire her services, you do have to pay a small fee! But it's totally worth it guys, I was really blown away by how she interpreted what I was hoping for, really exceeding expectations. Ok so enough ranting - if you wish to get artwork done by her, please email deborah.lim@live.com to find out more!! She's friendly ;)

328 Katong Laksa + The Cider Pit

Posted on Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Those who know me well will know what a weakness I have for laksa, all kinds, as long as it has hum (cockles) in it. I made the long and arduous trip all the way to the East to meet Mr Osman Khan to get my hands on the bonafide stuff at 328 Katong Laksa. Yum! Ordered too big a bowl (Medium sized at $5.00, personally a Small would have been suffice, but since I came all the way...) and of course I had extra cockles. Half the fun of laksa is really in the hum, and much fun did I have!

Later, Os introduced me to a new find in the east - The Cider Pit, which is newly opened and apparently has the widest range of ciders in Singapore! The place was completely full, but luckily we were early and got a seat. We both had the cider on tap, Westons Country Perry (a light and sweet one) for me and Westons Scrumpy (cloudy, rich and fruity) for Os! I personally liked mine a lot, and when I tried to order another one, it was all sold out! At $10.00 for a pint, and $5.00 for half a pint, it's really quite good value for money. Wish they had a branch nearer my place, then I'd be drinking cider all the time!

Mum's Day

Posted on Monday, May 27, 2013

It's a rare occasion these days that my family eats together, but we definitely made it a point to do so on Mother's Day of course! Ended up at Marmalade Pantry @ The Stables, my first time there, but thank goodness I took a cab in because the road in is completely pitch black and forested - the stuff of horror movies! Met the family anyway and we had dinner, after which we presented mummykins with our  yearly tradition of a handmade card just for her! She loves them so much. When we were young we made her so many cards it filled her entire office wall from floor to ceiling with them (who needs wallpaper). Of course since then we've tapered down our intense card making tendencies, but it's still great to see how happy she is whenever she receives them, like we gave her the best present in the world :)

Blueprint

Posted on Thursday, May 23, 2013

This whole weekend was kind of like Singapore's Fashion Week. After heading the Audi Fashion Festival with Jess; Po Xian, Coco and I decided to head down to The Blueprint Emporium, what they call "Asia's fashion gateway", which provides a space many fresh and upcoming designers from Asia to set up booths to showcase and sell their past collections. But really, it's just an excuse for Singapore's fashionistas to dress up and walk around - and much star spotting did we do! Highlights of the day would be Coco and myself being spotted by Japan's NTV crew to do a little interview on what we were wearing today, getting free Tiong Bahru Bakery tea (thanks to Po, who had extra coupons from working at the event :D) and really breathing in the whole Asian fashion scene. 10 years ago it would seem almost impossible to think of any sort of career in fashion here in Singapore, but maybe it's a not so distant dream these days.

Wine Voyage @ The Audi Fashion Festival

Posted on Monday, May 20, 2013

Hello! I feel so lucky to have gotten free tickets to Wine Voyage @ The Audi Fashion Festival, courtesy of The Straits Wine Company x SMU Wine Appreciation Club! The tickets entitled me and a friend of my choice (Jessica, whom I haven't seen since mid semester!) to 5 wine tastings from different capital cities around the world, namely Berlin, Paris, Milan, Madrid and Sydney, and it was held in a tent at Marina Promenade, overlooking the spectacular view of Gardens by the Bay. Personally, Jess and I just relaxed and enjoyed sipping the wine and catching up. My favourite wine for the night was from Sydney because it was... Moscato! Yep, I can never resist a glass of moscato, and of course, an excuse to dress up and go out for a night with any of my girl friends!

Valentino

Posted on Friday, May 17, 2013

Hey guys! Jess calls this our "5 seconds of fame", which is what we got at the Audi Fashion Festival today, feeling like superstars - posing in front of the huge backdrop and getting our pictures taken, but truth to be told, we're little people in this giant industry. Anyway, amidst some last minute changes in wardrobe, I decided to go with this feminine Valentino piece (which a lady came up to me on the street to compliment! A first!) and "moderned" it up with clear shoes and a clear clutch, more pictures coming up soon! Hey, you never know, maybe one day we'll be personally invited to grace Audi Fashion Festival 20xx!

Someone Like Me

Posted on Tuesday, May 14, 2013

One of my goals for this summer is to catch up on my reading, because I'm usually too busy during the semester to do any proper kind of book worming. Luckily I have my new book buddy E-main to do book exchanges with! Yay! Anyway, I was reading Midnight Children the other day and I realised how short my attention span has become, thanks to technology. I used to be able to focus on one task and read non-stop, but now, after every few pages I'd stop to potter around on my iPhone, or poke around the internet. Does anyone else feel this way?

Perspex-tive

Posted on Sunday, May 12, 2013

I'm so excited that my Scarlet Room Perspex Clutch came just in time for Audi Fashion Festival next week! I had been eyeing the customized one from MNO.logie but my sad student budget can't afford it. I like how the plastic is really thick and sturdy, but I do constantly fret that it will scratch very easily if I bring it out! Guess it's just one of those show pieces that you can't spend too much money on. While the Scarlet's Room version may be sold out, there are similar versions on Missypixie, and Strutt if you want to get a piece yourself!

La Cuisson, More French Food in Singapore

Posted on Friday, May 10, 2013

If you're looking for affordable French food options in Singapore that aren't Saveur, Justin and I discovered La Cuisson, located at Holland Drive, just a 10 minute walk away from Holland Village!

The shop was in a modest corner of the hawker center, with just one chef running the whole place, but despite the casual environment, our food came served on proper plates, just like a restaurant!

Can never resist ordering Foie Gras if it's on the menu! The La Cuisson version came as a Foie Gras Salad ($10.00+), and what yummy salad it was! There was a very strong taste of lemongrass in the dressing, not something I've tasted before with a salad. The lobe of foie gras itself was a decent size, similar to Saveur, but I would say higher quality because of the colour (bright yellow!) and not too strong a liver taste.

I order the Sous Vide Pork Neck ($15.00+)! Justin is a little ruffled since his speciality is sous vide ("I can make that for you!"), but I want to try it anyway to compare! Teehee. Pork neck is notoriously hard to cook properly - it's basically cheap meat, and if done wrong, can go very tough and dry. The La Cuisson one was nothing like that though. Because of the style of cooking, it's tender and moist on the inside, lying on a bed of warm mash and what looks like a little mustard sauce to dip it into. The dish is also complimented with the purple salad, which i'm not really a fan of because I don't like purple veggie. But other than that, it's a great choice!

Justin has the Angus Hanging Tender ($18.00+), which I can't review because I don't eat beef, but he says it's perfectly cooked for him. Medium rare! It actually does look very tender like it's name, haha!

Overall, I'd say that La Cuisson isn't AS cheap as Saveur, but definitely the portions are much larger and of higher quality meat. There seems to be a bit of a miscommunication online as to whether the shop is called Le Cuisson, or La Cuisson, but the restaurant signboard said La Cuisson, and French grammar confirms it should be La Cuisson, so that's it!
