Laundry Time with Laundrin

Posted on Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Laundry isn't much of a chore these days, because being able to run your own laundry room for your home without stressing out over if the clothes you've left hanging are blocking anyone's is a major relief (for the record, I sometimes leave mine hanging for over a week - sorry I'm busy with life ok)! Keeping the space neat and tidy has also been a huge priority of mine to help ease the mundanity of washing your clothes; and choosing the formulas you put into your laundry plays a huge part in that too.

I've just upgraded from my laundry softener to a new set sent over by Laundrin which comes in 4 different scents - this one is No. 7 which reminds me of the ocean. All Laundrin softeners are suitable for indoor drying, which basically is how I do our laundry all the time so that it doesn't get musty (fear of laundry falling is real, guys)! One thing I learnt is to never use softeners with your exercise clothes (like my precious lulus) as it removes their sweat wicking ability. Other than that, use them away for awesome smelling laundry! Laundrin's formula has added dust-repelling benefits that not only enhance comfort during wear, but also keep the clothes fresh and scented even after month's of storage.

The Classic Floral is my personal favourite scent because of how light it is. I've always taken the use of softeners as part of my laundry routine but it's interesting to note that the Laundrin softeners help to protect delicate fabrics so that your expensive clothes like my silks and chiffons to retain their shape, which in turn, prolongs their lifespan if one doesn't always have time to hand wash them. They also contain 100% plant-derived softening ingredients, protect your hands, and are gentle on sensitive skin if you do ever choose to use it to hand wash your delicates (which you can use the softeners to do too!)

I finally found the time to clean up my service yard and get all the cleaning tools in order. It truly was a mess, but having a clean and open space really makes all the difference! While we received an iron for our house warming, we kind of don't have an ironing board yet (oops). Apparently, laundry softeners make ironing clothes much easier. Laundrin has an anti-wrinkle formula that reduces the need to iron - so I guess our helper will thank us in the future!

These are the last two scents from Laundrin - Classic Fiore and Romantic Flower. It's akin to wearing perfume for our clothes and the scent is strongest when you first open up the washing machine, so it does make hanging your clothes a little more fun.

Doing the laundry is definitely much more bearable having your own home, but it's great to have a little extra oomph to elevate your fabric care game. For now, I can't wait to keep adding more useful storage to our service yard to keep it even more organised than it is now!

Homey with Heavenluxe

Heaven Luxe Tencel® Sheet Set | Muji Organic Cotton Jersey Duvet

We've been living in the house for over a month and it was time for a sheet switch to Heavenluxe's 100% Austrian Tencel Sheet Set (2 pillow cases and fitted sheet), and the Muji duvet which happened to be 20% off. I've been wanting jersey bedding every since one could ever start thinking about bedding (I started young, haha. Love love love homeware)... and I finally have it! Both are extremely soft and cozy, and compliment each other perfectly with their different textures.

Heavenluxe set only sells the pillows and sheets (they'll launch the duvet soon), but it was a plus because I could mix the colours up on our bed a bit. Matchy matchy sheets are fun, but I also love an eclectic look to add more dimension to the bed. Their tencel is sustainably made of eucalyptus, free of harmful chemicals (oeko-tex® certified!) and feels softer than silk. Plus it's super airy and thermo-regulating which is suitable for people with sensitive skin, like myself. I'm interested to see how it holds up in the washing machine over time, but yes - you can machine wash it!

Right now Heavenluxe only sells one colour - white, but I'm excited to see what they launch in future. While most people have 2 sets of bedsheets, I feel the itch to get more. There's just so much possibilities in the world and colours to add I am desperately trying to control myself!

European Bedding: Homey with the Heveya

Posted on Tuesday, January 29, 2019

I'm pretty amazed that we're here at all, renovation ready and finally getting the finishing touches to make our home liveable - i.e. our mattress from European Bedding!

Full disclosure: We were gifted their Heveya Mattress, but Justin and I are crazy about it! Buying a mattress for our first home is a very personal choice, so we still did a bunch of research on different types of mattresses and materials because we didn't know the first thing about them. I'm going to share with you guys more about what I found out and hopefully help you guys understand about the mattress industry more to help with your decision making (and I'll try not to be too biased, but we really love our mattress, did I say that already?)

What comes to mind when mattress shopping is usually showrooms blindingly lit with fluorescent lights and rows of mattress after mattress for you to lie on and attempt to tell the difference after an awkward 5 minutes of a salesman staring at you.

On top of that, the mattress industry is notoriously opaque, and it is generally known that no mattress model in one showroom is ever the same as another showroom. This is to intentionally confuse consumers from price matching and keep the margins high, which sucks for us!

It's so nice seeing European Bedding shake the industry a little and change my perception of what mattress shopping could be. Their showroom in Tiong Bahru is all kinds of interior goals and we were directed to just one simple option to try: The Heveya.

One unique selling point about the Heveya is that unlike most mattresses which are made of a mixture of springs, foam, memory foam etc, it is completely made of Latex - and not just any latex but 100% natural organic latex made from sustainably managed rubber trees in Sri Lanka!

Even if you don't consider yourself to be a greenie and just want to get something that is good value, 100% latex mattresses are considered the most durable of all mattress materials on top of being breathable, naturally dust mite and mould resistant, AND it conforms to your body shape, which is something that foam and spring mattresses do not do as well (a lot of mattresses are a mix of all materials though, but I'll talk about that more in a bit!)

I had to search hard to find bad things about latex mattresses because I really wanted figure out why more companies don't make them since the benefits are so outstanding, right??

So, the material of a Queen sized latex mattress requires the sap of 12 acres of rubber trees and 8 rubber tappers to tap the sap for one whole day, which is a lot of trees and not a small number of people for one mattress.

Simply put: Manufacturers rarely make 100% Latex Mattresss because it is just too expensive for them to mass produce and also get their margins. Hence, more cost-effective filler materials like spring and foam are often used, which is totally fine if you are on a budget and need an affordable option. Do beware that a lot companies try to ride on the wonderful benefits of latex by adding a thin 1-2 inch latex mattress topper above to sell it as "natural", so do check the composition of your mattress before purchasing!

I know it seems like Justin and I love finding cheap deals, but in actuality, we love finding value deals (i.e. we don't mind paying for things that are worth more than what we can get our there in the market). European Bedding's Heveya starts at $3.5K for a Queen and $4.5K for a King, which is not any more expensive than other "branded" mattresses, but the difference is that you know exactly what materials you are getting... and you are getting 100% all the good, quality stuff.

Of course, everything has its pros and cons and it wouldn't be fair not to share about it! The downsides to Latex are that a) it is considered heavy b) it is comparatively expensive c) there is some motion transfer.

I would say the weight of the mattress is compensated by the fact that it is actually split into several layers and zipped together in their all natural bamboo mattress cover, so the weight is very manageable. Moreover it can be rolled up when moving, and honestly, how often do you move your bed :'D

Price is relative, but I think I covered why it is a value buy earlier, and since you'll be keeping your mattress for 5-10 years it definitely is worth much consideration!

Motion transfer wise - yes, it is quite bouncy initially when you jump onto the bed, but having slept on it for a week already and being a very light sleeper, it honestly does not affect me, but I'll let you guys know again after 100 days (because European Bedding lets you have a 100 nights free trial for the mattress in which you can return it if you don't like it!)

So comfortable he was falling asleep in the showroom while I took pictures :'D

I've never known about the pains of being super tall, but according to Justin (who is 185cm), his ankles have hung over our Singapore sized mattress (183 x 190cm) for years, giving him a lot of pain. I always heard of people custom making their mattresses, but in actuality, a more cost effective method may to just be to buy an European sized one, which is a precious 10cm longer at 180 x 200cm! I've covered this quite extensively on my Instagram stories if you are worried that it is difficult to buy a bed frame because European mattresses sizes are "non-standard" here in Singapore.

The short story is: Other than custom making a frame which might be costly, all Ikea Singapore bed frames are European sized, as are the ones from Taobao / Ezbuy as well because Chinese mattresses are also 180 x 200cm, so... problem solved! And yes, the Heveya comes in European sizes, which we got for Justin, of course!

I even did my very own TL:DR table comparing all the mattress types and their pros and cons, but I am so, so happy we found our mattress for the next so many years with so little fuss.

Thank you so much to Thijs and the European Bedding team for giving us the
dream mattress for our new home! We love it so dearly

Christmas Memories with Fujifilm

Posted on Saturday, January 5, 2019

It's been a wild Christmas and year end getting the house done, dealing with The Ordinary Co's busiest period of the year and also finding time in between to hang with friends and enjoy the festive season! Super grateful for Fujifilm for sending me their SQ20 Instax to capture all the memories over December!

While I already have a rectangle Instax, there's just something very classic about a square one which has been missing in my life!! The Fujifilm SQ20 is the latest version after the SQ10 and comes with all kinds of nifty features like the live screen to preview and edit your photos before printing, and a large dial to navigate the camera. While part of the fun and mystique of printing instax's is not knowing what's going to come out, it can also be costly at parties because the moment may have passed and people may have moved on (or the precious instax may come out blank or not properly lit... which has happened to me so much :'D)

Fortunately this goes away since you can brighten and even add a filter to the images before printing them out! And if you want more than one, the photos can be saved and reprinted so that you don't have to get everyone to stand there and wait for multiple shots so that everyone gets an Instax, letting the party move on.

While it comes at a heftier price tag of $299 compared to other Instax cameras, it's a nice bridge between digital and analogue to future proof your moments! Now I can't wait for to capture the rest of the year. Cheers guys!

Hair Spa at J's Salon

Posted on Sunday, November 25, 2018

So I've been to J's Salon a few times before on my own, but sharing is caring right! This time the team kindly let me bring along dear Laveena for some girly spa time (cause goodness knows we hardly see each other in the day, hahaha).

Got our hair treated and pampered at the highest level of luxury one could ever hope for, and I have been so thoroughly spoilt to the point where I get kinda snobby when I go to other spas cause nowhere has as much attention to detail as J's!

Their Deluxe Garden Suite is E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. I will never, ever tire of how peaceful and tranquil it is with it's plush chairs, soothing sounds of the fountain trickling in the background, and the delicious smell of Kerastase products... all whilst overlooking the Singapore River!

But first! We got our scalp and hair condition diagnosed so that our treatment could be specially tailored to our needs. Was very honored to have salon director herself, June, who is also a certified trichologist, to take an in-depth look into both our hair and scalp condition.

For me, I have a sensitive scalp, so I was given the Kerastase Specifique anti-pelluclaire treatment and their Aura Botanica range for my damaged hair (it's organic!) to nourish and tame the frizz.

Changed into our tube dresses and fluffy robes, and then it was treatment time!

Today we did the Trichology Therapy (price list of all their hair services can be found here) which is about 2 hours and 15 minutes long. Started off with a chill foot massage, followed by a super relaxing neck and shoulder massages (there's something about the oils they use which are sooo intoxicating!)

Also had an endless supply of addictive snacks + their signature red date tea (which also is my favourite) - it's so homely and nostalgic. Must, must order this if you come down! I think I had something like 4 cups, not kidding.

Hair was shampooed, treatment rubbed in and deeply massaged with all the goodness of Kerastase products and then more (!!) massages while it was getting washed. I really can never get enough of them massages - and judging by Lavee's blissed out face, neither could she (I've also had my fair share of not-so-great massages while overseas and I can tell you that these are indeed well done and we were in very good hands!)

Apparently some ladies book out the entire salon for their Hen's Nights where it begins with a spa and ends up with everyone getting a fabulous blow-out, along with champagne and food that can be set up in the salon space outside the Deluxe Garden Suite. That sounds like a bloody good idea - anyone else agree??

Getting our hair steamed so that all the goodness of the treatments can be absorbed.

So blessed to be able to leave behind our bustling urban lives for just a little bit and enjoy this sanctuary. We got our hair blown out to peak softness and shininess and left the salon in slow motion like one of those hair ads, hahaha. Always sad to head back into the outside world, but it was amazing while it lasted!

Thanks to the team at J's Salon for having me again!!! You guys can quote my name "MONICA" at the salon always for $50.00 off any of their hair treatments - if you do head down please let me know how your experience was! I'd love to know!

Perfecting The Journey: Tumi Latitude

Posted on Thursday, August 2, 2018

Now that the house is almost done, it's nice to finally have a little breather to start traveling again, and travel we did! Can't believe it's already been a month since we went to Bali... and as if travel isn't wonderful on it's own already, I was gifted my very first TUMI luggage just in time for the trip - their newest, lightest and most durable yet: Latitude.

I've used Samsonite luggages since young, and ever since moving out of my family home, I've needed to get a luggage of my own (things you don't think about until you become an adult and realise that you need to stop using the family suitcases).

Getting a TUMI seemed like a natural upgrade, especially since Samsonite bought TUMI so they're basically the same family, except TUMI is basically your super cool, classy aunt who travels the world often and doesn't look a day past 30.

Timmy the Tumi (yes I named him, if you don't follow my Instagram) weighs just 2.8kg and is TUMI's lightest most flexible luggage yet, without compromising on the durability. This is due to their special SRRP Ballistic material in which layers upon layers of 100% polypropelene are pressed together to form the Latitude's outer casing. Fun fact: this material is also used for sporting equipment and in the automobile industry!

While Timmy is an International Carry-On size and thus, didn't have to go through the horrors of check-in, he did have his fair share of hits falling face first off a ledge when the wind blew him (as if I don't need a better example to show how light he is, ha!) But he got away clean without a single scratch on his body: a testament to the durability of the design.

Other than the airport, I did bring Timmy the Tumi out of the villa when we went for our day trips. Rolling him around was a dream because of how smooth and sturdy the wheel system is, and it was pretty funny because my friends would ask every day, "is Timmy coming along?" as if he were the 9th member of our 8 person group!

I think one of my favourite things about my new luggage is that they also provide monogramming services on your luggage - for life! They had a 4 letter limit, so I just put my initials ML (for lack of creativity, ok, and I figured I can always go back!) They even had other options and colours such as gold and silver for the font, but I personally preferred the blind embossing.

Another thing is that every TUMI luggage comes with a tracer number which can be registered online. While they can't actually locate the bag (it's not GPS guys), if it is ever found and returned to a TUMI store, they are able to use the 20-digit serial number at the back of the luggage to contact the owner!

Personally, I've learnt a lot about the brand over the last few months, and I definitely see TUMI as brand that combines both form and function. It is the choice bag for many frequent travellers who wish to upgrade, uncomplicate and beautify all aspects of life on the move... and it has a great brand name as well (let's face it guys, you wouldn't buy a thousand dollar luggage just for the luggage itself, ahem.)

So yes, I can't wait for more exciting journeys ahead with this one and a big thank you to the TUMI Marketing team for adding a little luxury into my travels - everyone loves Timmy a lot, and the hubby has already asked if he can borrow him when he goes on his business trips, haha!

Now the question is... Where to next?

The TUMI Latitude collection is now available in stores and online at www.tumi.sg. The Latitude International Carry-On retails at SGD1,090 and is available in silver, black and navy
