Travelogue: London - The Thing About Theatres

Posted on Wednesday, March 13, 2013

If I had all the time and money in the world, I definitely wish I could stay in London longer just to watch all the plays the city has to offer. London is one of the few cities in the world that has permanent world class musicals available almost every day. Instead of going with your friends to watch a movie, you can watch a play. How amazing is that?

This time round in London, we managed to catch two musicals - Les Misérables, as Justin is a huge fan of the opera; and Mathilda, a relatively new production surrounded by tons of hype because all its shows have sold out.

Les Misérables day

What's theatre without some pre-theatre tummy filling? For Les Mis we had the Pre-Theatre Menu at L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon. At £28.00 for a two course meal, and £33.00 for a three course meal, it was really quite a steal, since it was a two michelin star restaurant (thanks for the recommendation, Josh!)

We were pretty pressed for time, because the Pre-Theatre menu is only available for seatings between 5:30-6:00pm, and we had to eat quickly in order for us to make it for our play at 7:30pm, hence the lack of pictures and description of food! However, if there is one thing from Joël Robuchon's is the mashed potato puree - it's what he's famous for! Absolutely smooth, creamy and heavenly. You haven't tasted mash until you've tried his!

And we watch Les Mis! Tickets these year were especially hard to get, they always are really, but I think it was exacerbated by the release of the movie version this year. In preparation for this, Justin enthusiastically takes a trip down to London a month early to buy tickets from the theatre itself for all of us!

Mathilda Day

It's just Justin and I for Mathilda! We decide to hit some good ol' fish and chips at Rock & Sole Plaice. I think one of the reasons i've returned to this place is because of the name - rock, sole and plaice are all types of fishes, and I love how creatively they put it all together. Oh yes, and there is warm, deep fried, ginormous fish and chips!!

For some reason Justin and I decide to sit outside, even though it's winter. Unlike Singapore, dining in is more expensive than taking away. Justin has the large Plaice (£16.00), and I had the large Cod ($16.00), where if we were to take away, it would have cost us around £5.00 each. Ouch! But we had no where to sit, so we figured we'd just dine in.

We also had the Mushy Peas (£2.00), which i've never tried before, and will never try again after this. Never liked peas to begin with, and mushing them didn't help!

One thing I love about eating Fish and Chips in London is how readily available salt & vinegar is in the restaurants to dress your crispy fish. I learnt that it's the true blue way the English have their Fish and Chips - not with tartar - and I always have it this way as far as possible!

And we watch Mathilda! Further seats since it's a new musical and we didn't want to spend so much. I wasn't wowed - I guess I was expecting too much after hearing all the hyper leading up to it, which is a pity. It was still enjoyable, but certainly not stuff made for legends I think.

And that concludes our theatre adventures in London's West End! I guess I'll have to slowly work my way through conquering it all. Until then!
