Europe Outfit Diary

Posted on Saturday, October 11, 2014

Listening to: Atlas Hands - Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Dug up some unpublished photos above that Melissa took of me while we travelled in Europe during Exchange, and it made me miss Fall dressing very much. It's hard to get creative with layers here in the tropics where all you want to do is slap on your lightest shirt and shorts and head out of the house. Winter dressing is a little boring because all people see is your coat, but I do enjoy the challenge of getting all your winter accessories coordinated. My trick is to pick a multi-coloured scarf first, then pick the colour of my beanie and gloves according to colours in the scarf! You can see my outfits from London and Scotland where I applied the rule (sorry, that's the best fashion advice I can give other than wear the most colourful socks you can find in your boots cause no one will ever know).

I'm not sure if I miss exchange or the concept of exchange more.

Need. To. Go. Cold. Country. Now.

Pizza with Giulia

Posted on Saturday, March 15, 2014

I only had three full days left in Karlsruhe after my exams finished, so it was a huge rush to meet all the people I wanted to see before I left Germany indefinitely, and of course, Giulia was one of them! She was my first friend in Karlsruhe - when I couldn't find a house, she let me bunk in her gigantic hostel room FOC for a night while we both frantically apartment searched, and I ended up staying a week till we settled our accoms :) Yes, I randomly asked an Italian girl I had only met for a couple of hours if I could stay in her room  (I seem to have a habit of doing that), but we both know desperation makes you a little crazy, and luckily there are kindred spirits such as lovely Giulia around!

It's PIZZA NIGHT! One thing Giulia promised me is that she will make me Italian pizza from scratch before I leave, and she really goes all out to get all kinds of ingredients to bring over to my place! Mozzarella, champignions, potatoes, peppers, tomato sauce... you name it!

Giulia made the pizza dough from scratch in the morning because it needs time to rise, and then she uses a GLASS to roll it out. How cool is that?

I tell Giulia I have olive oil, but she insists on bringing hers, because it's the legit stuff that she brought all the way from Italy. Liking this more and more!

We get busy prepping the ingredients! Giulia shows me how to carve peppers properly (oops) and I amuse myself watching her shred the mozzarella onto the pizza because I've never seen proper mozzarella being done. So used to those yellowish, store bought, pre-shredded ones, but this ain't it!

Finishing off the pizza with toppings! We have 4 different flavours on 2 massive pan-sized pizzas - plus it's thin crust - my fave! Giulia shows me a jar of what she calls "carciofini" that her grandma bottled and gave for her to bring to Germany. So cute! She doesn't know what they are called in English, so I try guessing, but eventually we Google translate it, and... they're artichoke hearts! D'oh!

All ready for the oven!

My favourite of all! We both agree that we like the "white" pizzas (versus tomato based).

COULDN'T FINISH. This was my lunch the next day! Reheated pizzas yum yum.

We eat till we're full, take photos and talked till late. I don't think I'll ever forget this experience eating pizza cooked by a dear, bona fide Italian friend - it definitely beats going to any Italian restaurant! And I'm so terribly jealous about how long she gets to stay in Karlsruhe (especially when she told me the other day how the flowers are all in bloom and everything looks pretty. Ahhh!)

We can't control who walks in and out of our lives, and all we can do is just enjoy the experiences and be rejoice that we had them rather than feel sad that it's over. I didn't have a chance to go to Italy this trip, and I definitely plan to go sometime in the near future, so I have a strong feeling that Giulia and I may meet again one day :) Til then!

Freiburg Forest

Posted on Friday, February 28, 2014

Primark Beanie | ASOS Snoood | C&A Gloves | Mango Coat
Topshop Jeans | Primark Boots | Forever21 Sweater | Vintage Backpack

I suppose this post counts as an outfit post, which I don't have the discipline to do most of the time because there's so much more to share from my travels other than what I wore! But that said, I do love indulging in what other people wore and I really admire people who have the focus to specialize in blogging in just one specific area of interest.

Anyway, Freiburg is in the Black Forest region in Germany, a 2 hour train ride from Karlsruhe, and worth at most a day trip in my opinion. Winter is never a good time to travel - I remember Pei Li and I getting our feet getting stuck knee deep in snow and skidding around on icy forest grounds most of the time, but the tiny hill in Freiburg was peaceful, and if it's not obvious here, seriously chilly. And yes - we did eat Black Forest cake back in the city - it actually wasn't invented here despite having the same namesake, but how could you not eat a Black Forest cake in the Black Forest of Germany right???
