Montana Brew Bar

Trishna was invited down for a tasting at Montana Brew Bar and lucky me got invited along! Montana actually isn't a new cafe in Singapore, but they have been newly refurbished and relocated to this big, beautiful, urban chic, light-filled space within PoMo (near SMU, or a 10 minute walk from Plaza Singapura).

Came on a weekday but there was quite a lot of people around, fortunately the cafe is big (there's two levels!) and we got ourselves a nice brightly lit seat, cause priorities you know.

I'm not a giant fan of savoury waffles, always thought I preferred their dessert counterparts but after this my mind totally changed! More in a bit, but first...
We were introduced to their Coconut Cold Brew ($6.50) which apparently is a first in Singapore. It is suitable for people who don't really like black coffee because the coconut helps add an extra flavour and sweetness to it!

Plus the coconut comes in an ice sphere which melted slowly throughout our meal to keep the drink cold and change the flavour over time. The one above is the "Regular" and comes in this kitschy flask.

Also tried the "Gula Melaka" flavour of the Coconut Cold Brew ($7.00). Trishna and I both preferred this one since it's sweeter (disclaimer, we both don't drink black coffee, that's why). It's pretty cool how they weave in local flavours to this one!
Time for food!!! Everything smelled SO good when it arrives.

Once again I love how there's a local twist to their waffle flavours. The Assam Crab Waffle ($18.00) is seriously pretty. It's base is made of a special blend of 8 spices and generously topped with big chunks of crab meat, radish, pineapple and cucumbers. Another unique thing was the assam gula melaka mayo which came on the side as a dipping salsa which packs a punch of flavour to alleviate the taste of the waffle. So much fun!

Although it's visually plainer than the Assam Crab Waffle, I personally preferred the taste of the Jalapeño Mac & Cheese Waffle ($12.50). The waffle itself has so much flavour and is even a little spicy because the jalapeño and mac & cheese weaved inside the waffle! Oh yes, and did I mention that there's truffle oil in this?

You would think that with the mac & cheese inside the waffle that it would be super dense and heavy, but the waffle is light, crisp and airy (but still filling of course). There's also a tomato relish sauce on the side which once again goes great with the waffle - super thoughtful! Would definitely reorder this one if I come back again!

We've all heard of Red Velvet, but this is my first time hearing of Black Velvet so I was itching to try it. The Black Velvet Waffle ($14.00) is made of black sesame, black miso caramel and hints of charcoal with a choice of black sesame or matcha ice cream on top. We chose black sesame cause, you know, black velvet, haha. I like how it's not just a plain waffle but there's little bits of crunch of these black sesame bits which they make in-house.

That's all! The staff at Montana were super generous and I seriously wish I had more tummy space to try a wider variety of flavours. Would definitely recommend coming in bigger groups so you can get more variety as there were many other interesting sounding waffles on the menu like Southern Fried Chicken Waffle or the Red Velvet Waffle (which comes in a stack). There's even a burger bar on the lower floor which we didn't get to try since, you know, full.
Montana is definitely worth the visit for some hearty food, especially since there are so few independant cafes in town!
