London Diaries - In Between Storms

 London means something to everyone who has passed through it, but belongs to nobody.

I don't think I can ever run out of things to do or places to see in this city. Museums, markets, food, shopping, tea, day trips close by and sight-seeing... I'm a perpetual tourist here, and even though I've been so many times the past few years, I still I haven't finished seeing it all - but I don't ever plan on living here because I'm scared it will take the magic away from the city. Every time I've come to London, I've always known I'll be coming back real soon, but somehow this time it's different. The last walk down Westminster alone to spend some time with Big Ben and to reminisce about the first time I met him in 2008 was hard. You never know when is the last time you'll ever see a place again.

Anyway, I'm so glad to have dear Pei Li as my biggest companion for this trip - I think she's one of the truly nicest people I know and it's funny because we've been friends for 10 years and we've both suddenly grown up into adults, seeing the world together, and suddenly I realised that we have changed and maybe I don't know her as well despite us having been neighbours for so long. Yet, she has never forgotten a birthday or a Christmas to give me a present, or to always send a postcard when she travels, or to lend a helping hand whenever I need silly things like a printer or even (for goodness knows what) a screwdriver, so yes, this trip was a really nice opportunity to really spend proper time together and get to "re-know" each other in a way - how we've changed, how we were, how we want to be.

It doesn't look like it, but there was a huge storm that blew through London, but this is what I managed to catch in between.

London's Borough Market

It's hard not to get overwhelmed by all the sights and smells in Borough Market. Every single shop was so elaborately set up and brimming with all kinds of produce, it made you want to buy everything. It's also hard to believe I haven't come here earlier, because what kind of market is better than one with FOOD? Pei Li and I make a beeline for the oyster store because that's what we're here for and I start off with half a dozen (but have 10 in total). Yes, I love oysters! I'm not sure which shop excites me the most - the one overflowing with all kinds of unique mushrooms that I've never seen before; the ones giving out free cheese samples that my itchy fingers cannot resist; the stores with the brightly colored fresh, fresh fish (sashimi, is that you?); elaborately decadent desserts; super cheap avocados at 3 for £1.50; or maybe the one selling all kinds of exotic meat burgers from Ostrich to Reindeer to Kangaroo (we go for the kangaroo!). The place is a foodie heaven for everyone and is definitely going to be a stopover for me from now on every time I visit London in future.

London Shopping Favourites

I'm so happy with my London hauls this year! These are a few of my favourite pieces I picked out. Sometimes you get so giddy with sales you end up picking out too many trendy pieces that you only wear once or twice, so I really made it a point before the Boxing Day sales this year to make an exact list of pieces that I know I can wear over and over, and I've been wanting for a while. I made it a point to look out for them and not get too distracted by things I didn't need (though I did get a couple of pieces just cause they were "pretty". Oh well.) But overall, I'd say that making the list really helped and I'm so glad to tick so many pieces off, and all at bargains too! My best find would be the UO Chevron Rug which was going at just £7.00 and my wool hat from Camden Market which I haggled down from £20.00 to £13.00. Who'd thunk you could haggle here in the UK? The only thing that wasn't on sale was the Baies candle, but I decided to treat myself have one luxury at least.

Anyway, I can't wait to wear them all when I get home. Now only to fit them all in my luggage...
