Montana Brew Bar

Posted on Monday, January 18, 2016

Trishna was invited down for a tasting at Montana Brew Bar and lucky me got invited along! Montana actually isn't a new cafe in Singapore, but they have been newly refurbished and relocated to this big, beautiful, urban chic, light-filled space within PoMo (near SMU, or a 10 minute walk from Plaza Singapura).

Came on a weekday but there was quite a lot of people around, fortunately the cafe is big (there's two levels!) and we got ourselves a nice brightly lit seat, cause priorities you know.

I'm not a giant fan of savoury waffles, always thought I preferred their dessert counterparts but after this my mind totally changed! More in a bit, but first...

We were introduced to their Coconut Cold Brew ($6.50) which apparently is a first in Singapore. It is suitable for people who don't really like black coffee because the coconut helps add an extra flavour and sweetness to it!

Plus the coconut comes in an ice sphere which melted slowly throughout our meal to keep the drink cold and change the flavour over time. The one above is the "Regular" and comes in this kitschy flask.

Also tried the "Gula Melaka" flavour of the Coconut Cold Brew ($7.00). Trishna and I both preferred this one since it's sweeter (disclaimer, we both don't drink black coffee, that's why). It's pretty cool how they weave in local flavours to this one!

Time for food!!! Everything smelled SO good when it arrives.

Once again I love how there's a local twist to their waffle flavours. The Assam Crab Waffle ($18.00) is seriously pretty. It's base is made of a special blend of 8 spices and generously topped with big chunks of crab meat, radish, pineapple and cucumbers. Another unique thing was the assam gula melaka mayo which came on the side as a dipping salsa which packs a punch of flavour to alleviate the taste of the waffle. So much fun!

Although it's visually plainer than the Assam Crab Waffle, I personally preferred the taste of the Jalapeño Mac & Cheese Waffle ($12.50). The waffle itself has so much flavour and is even a little spicy because the jalapeño and mac & cheese weaved inside the waffle! Oh yes, and did I mention that there's truffle oil in this?

You would think that with the mac & cheese inside the waffle that it would be super dense and heavy, but the waffle is light, crisp and airy (but still filling of course). There's also a tomato relish sauce on the side which once again goes great with the waffle - super thoughtful! Would definitely reorder this one if I come back again!

We've all heard of Red Velvet, but this is my first time hearing of Black Velvet so I was itching to try it. The Black Velvet Waffle ($14.00) is made of black sesame, black miso caramel and hints of charcoal with a choice of black sesame or matcha ice cream on top. We chose black sesame cause, you know, black velvet, haha. I like how it's not just a plain waffle but there's little bits of crunch of these black sesame bits which they make in-house.

That's all! The staff at Montana were super generous and I seriously wish I had more tummy space to try a wider variety of flavours. Would definitely recommend coming in bigger groups so you can get more variety as there were many other interesting sounding waffles on the menu like Southern Fried Chicken Waffle or the Red Velvet Waffle (which comes in a stack). There's even a burger bar on the lower floor which we didn't get to try since, you know, full.

Montana is definitely worth the visit for some hearty food, especially since there are so few independant cafes in town!

Masons Singapore

Posted on Wednesday, January 6, 2016

So Jiehui and I ventured out to Gillman Barracks (a.k.a. less popular version of Dempsey) to try out Masons since I have the one-for-one Mains thanks to The Entertainer App. Fun fact: I bought the app this year again but I can share it with Justin since all he has to do is download the app on his phone and sign into my account. Yes, multiple sign ins are allowed which means, score, we can both use it when we go out!

Slow lunch on a Monday at Masons.

About Masons - after the one-for-one discount our bill rang up to S$47.00 for both of us (for the pizza, the pasta and two drinks). Was a little shocked when we asked for water and the waiter brought out a bottle of S.Pellegrino's without even asking if we wanted still/sparkling water, or if we even wanted to pay for our water. Isn't it common courtesy in restaurants to ask and not assume?

Anyway so I quickly stopped him and asked how much it was, and he said "$2.00", but then later he came back to us and said $2.00 is for... tap water? I really don't get restaurants that charge for water here in Singapore - even at $0.50 I don't get it. Clearly they wanted us to buy drinks, which we already did, so shouldn't there be a rule in restaurants that if you buy drinks you get free water or something?

But other than that, food was decent. They ran out of the one truffle dish we were there for, but I think their pizza was surprisingly good. Got their House Special pizza (S$26.00++) which has all the things pizzas need IMO: pepperoni, mushrooms, artichokes, ham and a thin crispy crust. Would not really recommend their pastas unless you have the one-for-one.

Also because it was Monday, we could take a slow, slow lunch because we were the only ones there. Ah, life.

Staycation at Lloyd's Inn

Posted on Saturday, December 26, 2015

Can't believe the last (and only) time Justin and I ever had a staycation was about 4 years ago when we first got together! I think one key thing that I have in mind when picking a hotel is how unique the rooms are and, oh, the fact that I was also working during the day doing the Christmas shoot for The Ordinary Co and Lloyd's Inn, so we figured we may as well fully utilise the room at night!

I think the photos speak for themselves how bright and inspiring the hotel rooms were. Justin and I were staying in the Big Sky Room which goes at around S$250.00++ a night, but they have plenty of other room types at different price ranges. It was cozy and surprisingly quiet at night - it felt like we were far, far away from the city (but Somerset was a 5-10 minute walk away)!

I wish I had the time to try out the dipping pool, but rainy December days was mostly a no no. To maximize our time in the room, we ordered in mexican via Food Panda (just cause) and had a relaxing bubble bath under the open skies! All in all we really enjoyed ourselves!

If you would like to win your very own 2D1N stay at Lloyd's Inn, head over to TOC's Facebook page here, Like & Share our Christmas album by 1st Jan 2016 and leave a comment on why a stay would be the perfect gift! You can also head over to @lloydsinn or @theordinaryco's Instagram pages to find out how to increase your chances of winning! All the best!
