Red Bull Curates: The Canvas Cooler Project

Posted on Wednesday, May 8, 2013

Took the Sunday a little off the beaten path in support of my dear, talented friend, Deborah, who was curated by Red Bull out of many other young budding artists to design a cooler for them! The Red Bull Canvas Cooler Project, Singapore is Red Bull's way of giving students space to showcase their creativity on their own coolers, as a common issue here is artists not having enough space to truly express themselves artistically. With the famous arrest of The Sticker Lady, I guess this event is even more meaningful for artists here in Singapore.

The Pop-up event was held at The Reading Room at Tanjong Pagar - what a great space! I loved the high, sloping ceilings, and how they did the whole area up with the coolers on their own little tables. Pretty classy for a Red Bull event, actually. Most of my impression of the brand is girls baring their midriffs and handing me free drinks, so thumbs up for them!

And here's the artist herself! So proud of her, chasing her dreams in a society that prizes studies over art. Respect!

With said cooler! Deborah used acrylic paints on canvas for this to convey the "psychedelic, ethereal journey of The Lotus Eaters". I personally love how bright and trippy the colours are. You can't really see it with the lighting so I grabbed some of these pictures that Deborah took herself of the cooler.

And I did take pictures of the other coolers as well, but really, this visit really was for her, so don't mind if it's a little biased ;)

With her mentor!

Deborah's cooler will be on display permanently at The Forbidden City, Indochine. If you love her work, she's also freelancing and you can email her at deborah.lim@live.com if you'd like to get a portrait or some artwork done!

Marble

Posted on Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Yay! There are perks of having a dear friend like Pei Li who lives just 300 metres away from me and bakes awesomely! Came over for a tea time snack and just-out-of-the-oven marble cake, something she decided to bake on a whim. We've been friends ever since primary school that fateful day when my little sister and I stuck our heads out of our dining room window and saw her and her little sister, Pei Ting playing badminton downstairs. We ran down to join them, and the rest is history! Anyway she just left for her round the world grad trip while I stay here in little old Singapore for the rest of summer. But we had a nice time catching up anyway, we're different but we feel the same about lots of things, and I hope she has a ball of a time!!! Can't wait till it's my turn :)

Food Glorious Food!

Posted on Monday, May 6, 2013

Justin's passion is cooking, and there's hardly any fun in doing so without sharing it with some friends! As usual, to celebrate the end of semester, we hosted a cookout at Justin's house and invited over 20 friends over to feast! Cooking for 20 people was no mean feat. Justin started prep 4 whole days in advanced, and I just helped wherever I could like chopping veggies and such (hey it's hard work).

Here's the menu!

Mughal Curry!

Oops I screwed up the signage for this a bit. There were chunks of sinewy lamb in this, which fell apart easily at the touch - oh, and at my request, tons of cumin seeds! Yum :D

Nasi Lemak!

Ok you'll probably balk if you knew how much coconut milk was in this, but it was a nice sticky filler for everyone!

Pesto Chicken Thighs!

I never knew that there was cheese in pesto! We had to do a lot of prep work for this because of all the different veggies to cut, to boil, and then blend together with a food processor. But I think the result was really good! Not over oily like some pestos, and unused blocks can be frozen for future use!

Hello early comers!

This is Justin's prize winner - roasted pork belly! One giant hunk of meat cooked for 3 hours to perfection. Juicy and fatty on the inside, with the skin all crackled, blistered and bubbled for the crunch. Needless to say, everyone was queuing up and killing each other for this haha.

Serving John his pork belly! He was the most enthusiastic patron of the night because he came on time and ate so much, which is a great compliment to the chef haha.

Entertaining everyone with Jenga and movies. The playlist for the night was The Devil Wears Prada and Hitch. Both pretty good movies to entertain a big group because they are lighthearted, rewatchable (so people who watched it before won't be bored), and funny! Haha sometimes one of the biggest issues with organizing parties is wondering how to entertain adults.

And that's more or less it! I was pretty lazy to take more photos. I remember we had to off the lights halfway through because it was going to rain and those horrible flies were coming into the house. The issues that come with living in a tropical country! Anyway we were pretty happy that more or less all the food was finished! These cookouts fuel Justin's passion for cooking, and it was great that everyone came down to support it and contribute to it so that he can get the best ingredients and continue making awesome food! 'Til the next cook out!
